India's Smartphone shipments registers Single digit growth of 4%; Xiaomi leading

India's smartphone shipments grew only 4% year-on-year to reach a little over 31 million units in the January-March Quarter.
But the market saw a steep decline in March,the last month of quarter(Q1) due to COVID-19 outbreak .The decline was about -19% , Counterpoint said
The first two months saw a lot of launches and more launches were announced for upcoming months which got postponed due to the pandemic.

Xiaomi once again continued to lead the Indian smartphone market with a 6% growth Year-on-Year to reach its highest ever market  share since Q1 of 2018.
Vivo came to second spot displacing Samsung .Vivo grew 27% YoY and Q1 of 2020 share is 17% than previous year's 12% growth.

Realme saw a staggering YoY(Year-on-Year) growth of 119%  due to company's aggressive launches and secured 4th Spot in Q1 2020 with 14% share . Oppo's shipments grew 83% in the quarter.

POCO, which became independent from Xiaomi  captured a 2% market share during it's first entire month of operations in March 2020.In the price segment of Rs.15000-20,000 it was among top 5 brands.

Samsung was the No.1 premium smartphone brand surpassing OnePlus in its flagship launch quarter.
Apple grew 78% YoY which was driven by massive shipments of iPhone11 and secured the No.1 position in ultra-premium segment with a market share of 55%.

Counterpoint said that any signs of recovery will likely only start from the third quarter onwards. Shipments will decline by 10% for the full calendar year the agency estimated.

"The Covid-19 effect on India was relatively mild until mid-March.However, economic activities declined as people save money in the expectation of the extended period of uncertainty and an almost complete lockdown," Prachir Singh,Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research said.
